Incidental focal liver lesions are commonly encountered during abdominal ultrasound examinations and can create uncertainty and anxiety regarding interpretation, reporting and appropriate follow-up.
Whilst many lesions have typical benign appearances, others demonstrate indeterminate features or can be identified in patients with differing clinical backgrounds, making conclusions and recommendations challenging.
Distinguishing true lesions from pseudo lesions and knowing when further imaging is required are common challenges for sonographers of all experience levels. Small differences in reporting and recommendations can have a significant impact on patient anxiety and the pathway.
